FORMAT Project Updates

FORMAT Technology Forecasting Workshop, Wroclaw, Poland, Feb 21, 2014

The mission of FORMAT project has been to create a repeatable and usable technology forecasting methodology. Whirlpool Italia has offered several key technologies to serve as case studies for the new FORMAT methodology. Vacuum forming was chosen as the technology showpiece. To invest or not to invest in vacuum forming in the coming years was the challenge the FORMAT core team undertook. The active audience participation led to interesting discussions and important feedback for the development of the methodology.

Presenting Technology Forecasting Outcomes

This white paper describes an important aspect of the FORMAT (FOrecasting and Roadmapping of MAnufacturing Technologies) methodology. How to present outcomes from a technology forecasting project has been considered as a separate and important stage in the FORMAT methodology. The end user will consider a technology forecast worthwhile their time only if the forecast is easy to understand and can be applied for making decisions. The end user considered in this case is a decision maker in a corporate context.

Envisioning the future of your technical system through analogies and adaptation

The definition of a finite set of possible alternative about the future development of technical systems is a critical issue in every company that aims at proposing innovative solutions to their customers. By means of this anticipatory analysis, the companies can plan, with appropriate resources and time, the development of their products, processes or services so as to both match the specific demands emerging in various contexts and consistently with the latest advancements of science and technology.

FORMAT methodology from project management perspective

From our experience of case study applications of the FORMAT methodology, forecasting results appear, thanks to a sort of learning process. Learning requires time and repetitions. These two elements - time and repetition have a direct consequence in project management life cycle. This paper addresses these elements and other project management solutions embedded in the FORMAT methodology that manifested themselves during case studies done for Whirlpool EMEA.

On the definition of functions for the identification of system requirements

The evolution of technical systems depends on two different aspects: first, the emerging of new demands from the market and, second, the opportunity due to new scientific advancements resulting in the development of new technologies. In this context the definition of requirements for technical systems is the key to understand what is supporting or preventing the technical evolution of products and processes. Indeed, system requirements represent the knowledge elements linking technology to the demands from market.

The results of these two groups of companies have been achieved through the application of the FORMAT methodology: methodology that has been developed within a European project coordinated by Prof. Cascini with intent to provide a systematic guide to the development of technology foresight in the industrial sector .

These two experiences was accompanied by the talk of Pierluigi Petrali, ofWhirlpool Europe, industrial partner in FORMAT project. This large multinational is not only one of those cases that reinforce their investment in Italy, but also for several years has used a structured approach of forecasting to support their decision-making processes, and to contribute to the development and validation of the FORMATmethodology by various innovative case-studies.

Contradictions in the domain of technological forecasting

Decision making about future technologies like founding into research, purchasing new equipment or  investing  into  human  resources  needs  a  forecast  about  future  socio-technological  changes. Technological  forecasting  as  a  regular  practice  started  to  grow  from  the  1950s. Forecasting  and roadmapping  of  technologies  started  to  grow  in  importance  from  the  middle of 1990s due  to increased  complexity  of  science  and  technology  management.  Forecasting  and  roadmapping  of manufacturing  technologies  are  more  and  more  demand  from  industrial  companies  and  research institutions  due  to  the  high  investment  cost  into  modern  technologies  and  the  rapid  pace  of technology changes in the beginning of 21st century.
